In 1985 the Arenales Salinas and San Pedro del Pinatar are created as a protected nature reserve in 1992 and became Regional Park. This is a wetland with sand bordered on the north by weirs, which reported the Mar Menor in the Mediterranean. Since 1994 is included in the List of Wetlands of International Importance (according to the RAMSAR convention), along with the Mar Menor. Since 1998 is regarded as a Special Protection Area for birds (SPAs), therefore belongs to the Natura 2000 of the Union Europea.Forma important part of the Mar Menor which is a Specially Protected Area Mediterranean Importance (SPAMI ). It covers an area of 837 hectares and belongs to the municipalities of San Pedro del Pinatar and San Javier. Since January 2002, runs the Center for Research and Conservation of Wetlands "Salinas" at the entrance to the nature reserve.
